A dear member of the Mountain Lake family passed away last week. Elizabeth (Bess) Murray, wife to former Station Director Jim Murray, made MLBS her home and life for many years. Those who remember those days know how much she contributed to life and science on the Station. She helped define the atmosphere and culture of joyful inquisitiveness we all take for granted now. Some of the work Bess was most proud of (and there was a lot!) includes the natural history essays she wrote, and Lucile Walton illustrated, for Virginia Wildlife in the 1970s and 80s - In Nature's Garden (click to see our archive). Her heart never left Mountain Lake. And she will never leave ours.
